What is a prosthesis?

Prosthetics is the art and science of developing artificial replacements for body parts. An artificial limb is called a prosthesis. A prosthesis can be designed to provide functional or cosmetic benefits. A prosthesis may be attached to the residual limb by a variety of methods. This process does not require surgery.

Prosthesis or no prosthesis?

Deciding whether you want to wear a prosthesis at all is an important decision. Many people with an amputation quickly adapt to their circumstances, finding new ways to go about their daily activities, pursue an active lifestyle and meet the challenges of their condition. Some reach the conclusion that they do not need a prosthesis.

Some people with limb loss feel that the most important feature of a prosthesis is that it closely resembles their lost limb. The function of the prosthesis may not be as important and so a passive prosthesis that looks natural but does not move or grasp may be the best solution.  If this is how you feel, then maybe a natural-looking passive device can help you.
