1 December 2008 - i-LIMB Hand wins Prosthetic Product Innovation Award

Touch Bionics receives accolade at Limbless Association’s gala dinner

Livingston, Scotland – December 1, 2008 – Touch Bionics, developer of the world’s first commercially available bionic hand, announced today that its i-LIMB Hand product has won the Limbless Association’s Prosthetic Product Innovation Award for 2008. The company accepted the award at the Limbless Association’s annual gala dinner in London.

“We are delighted to receive this award from such a leading user group like the Limbless Association and feel that it reflects the growing numbers of users that have adopted the i-LIMB Hand in such a short period of time,” said Phil Newman, marketing director, Touch Bionics, accepting the award. “The upper limb community has not benefited from significant leaps in research and development for a very long time, and the response we have received shows us that there is great interest in next generation technology.”

The i-LIMB Hand is a first-to-market prosthetic device with five individually powered digits. With over 20 years of research and development behind it, the i-LIMB Hand looks and acts like a real human hand and represents a generational advance in bionics and patient care. Since the launch, more than 450 patients worldwide have been fitted and Touch Bionics is rapidly expanding across the globe.

“It was a great pleasure to be able to present this award to Touch Bionics, and I felt honoured to be asked,” said Ray Edwards, CEO of the Limbless Association. “As a quad amputee, I was the first NHS patient in the UK to be fitted with the i-LIMB Hand and I have had the opportunity to meet with the design team and management of Touch Bionics, which has created a true friendship.”

“I lost my limbs more than 20 years ago, and my i-LIMB Hand fitting in May this year was the first time I was able to see a hand moving on my left side. It was a very emotional experience and has since given me such a boost, both physically and mentally - it now even helps me to learn to fly a plane! Well done to the winners - it has certainly changed my life.”

Developed in Scotland, the UK remains a key market for the i-LIMB Hand, and the company is beginning to see greater traction with the UK’s National Health Service, having now fitted eight patients through the NHS. This trend is reflective of the growing number of i-LIMB Hand users being fitted within state healthcare systems across the world.
