18 August 2009 - Touch Bionics opens UK Centre of Excellence

Secretary of State for Scotland opens new facility designed to provide fast track access to clinical and technical experts

Livingston, Scotland – August 18, 2009 – Touch Bionics™, developer of the world’s first multi-articulating bionic hand, today announced the opening of its UK Centre of Excellence, located in Livingston, Scotland. The Rt. Hon. Jim Murphy MP, Secretary of State for Scotland, was in attendance to officially declare the world-class facility open.

“Touch Bionics is a shining example of Scotland’s ability to produce world-leading technology companies, and I am delighted to be here today to open its UK Centre of Excellence,” said Mr. Murphy. “This facility demonstrates the ambition of Touch Bionics to grow its business by offering more to the amputee community that it already serves so well.”

Touch Bionics’Centre of Excellence offers full clinical services to upper limb amputees. The services are tailored to each individual’s needs and governed by the company’s Touch Life Total Care Program, which takes the whole range of prosthetic solutions into account.

The Centre of Excellence offers clinical assessments, recommendations and insurance reimbursement support, as well as occupational therapy and the chance to participate in Touch Bionics’ ongoing research and development projects. The company’s unique approach, offering patients fast track access to clinical experts, sets the Centre of Excellence apart from many other types of clinical establishments.

“Our team of highly skilled professionals are on hand to support patients every step of the way, to help them reach their highest potential level of function, independence and quality of life,” said Stuart Mead, Touch Bionics’ CEO. “We are extremely pleased to have the Secretary of State for Scotland here to help us open the UK Centre of Excellence, and are looking forward to welcoming clinical customers and their families and friends to our facility.”

The Centre of Excellence’s resident team of clinical and support staff work with patients to ensure that the appropriate technology is provided, and that patients and their relatives and carers alike are well looked after in the specialist facility. A rehabilitation team is formed for each case and is responsible for the clinic’s unique “total care” approach.

Before a patient visits the facility, Touch Bionics will perform a remote case evaluation under the guidance of its in-house prosthetic experts, to determine if a visit to the centre is required.
